Mississippi

Welcome to Mississippi! Toomsuba, was our home for the past week. We had a longer drive than usual from Shreveport KOA, but we got up early and made it to the Toomsuba KOA in good time, way before dark. That is always our goal.

Known as the birthplace of America's Music. Mississippi is the birthplace of Elvis (King of
Rock and Roll), Jimmie Rodgers (Father of Country music), and B.B. King (King of the Blues).
"My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing, yes,I will sing praises!" Ps 57:7 (NASB)

Hope each one of you had a Happy Valentine's Day. Hubby and I went out to eat dinner on Valentines and that is very unusual for us. When we checked into the Toomsuba/East Meridian KOA, we were told about the restaurant in Meridian. It is the oldest restaurant in Mississippi and one of the oldest in America. A Swiss immigrant, Felix Weidmann, opened the restaurant in 1870 housed in the Union Hotel on Front Street and then moved it to its local location on 22nd Avenue in 1923. It stayed in the Weidmann family until 1990 and then a group of local citizens purchased the building and renovated the restaurant keeping the Weidmann name.

Ready for dinner.

Well, Mississippi did not disappoint. We had some cooler weather, cold weather and one day that was just right. Meaning, I would sit outside, with the fire pit going, of course.

Tom Bailey Lake and Park.

Meridian has some amazing old buildings, hubby and I enjoyed walking around downtown looking at them. One that intrigued me was the Threefoot Hotel. A German-Jewish immigrant, Abraham Threefoot, came with his brothers in the mid 1800's. Abraham made shoes during the Civil War for the Confederacy. After the war the family settled in Meridian, Mississippi. Fun fact: Abraham's surname was Dreyfuss (which means three foot in German, he changed it to help him fit into the community). He opened a grocery store and continued to prosper. He started building the Threefoot hotel, which is the tallest building in Meridian. It is not really known why it was built so high. Unfortunately, the Great Depression began and the number of tenants in the building started to decline, which forced the family to spend a lot of money to maintain the building. as a result, they relinquished ownership. It became home to many businesses over the years, but was totally abandoned by the 1990's. In 2013, an organization called the Threefoot Preservation Society was established to start restoring the building. The culmination of this effort led to the building's current conversion into a Marriott hotel.

I thought this was a cool picture of clouds and the moon. So, you know me, I had to share it with you.

Saw this while taking Gus on his evening walk.

Well, a new state with new information about their birds, trees, flowers and motto.

*Mississippi: Cheerful Mockingbird (Bird) selected as the official state bird in 1944, Southern Magnolia (Tree), Magnolia (Flower), and Virtute et Armis, meaning, "By Valor and Arms" (Motto) .

If there is something special you would like me to take a picture of, please let me know!
