Ferndale, California

One last look at the Mount Shasta sky. The Lord is so creative! I truly love looking at the sky and seeing the clouds, but this is His light shining through and it just made the sky so beautiful. I hope that the photos will capture the beauty we saw! "Do you know the balancing of the clouds, the wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge;" Job 37:16 (ESV)

Driving from the heat of Mount Shasta, we saw the temperature drop from 105 to 62. We also saw the fog lifting from the ocean, I really enjoyed watching the fog being burned off by the sun.

Now to share about the fun and cute town Ferndale. My high school friend, Lora and her husband, Mike bought a home in Ferndale, CA. The town was established in 1852 by Willard Allard, Seth Louis Shaw and his brother Stephen W. Shaw. The city contains dozens of well-preserved Victorian storefronts and homes. It is the northern gateway to California's "Lost Coast" and the city, is sited on the edge of a wide plain near the mouth of the Eel River. When we cross over the Fernbridge bridge (built in 1911) to go to their home, the Eel River isn't flowing or really like a river. California needs rain. While I am typing this, fires are consuming over 320,000 acres in the state of California. After we arrived in Fortuna, they closed the road we were driving on to get there. We saw the fire on the hill, but I couldn’t take a picture quick enough to show you.

We have enjoyed touring downtown Ferndale and seeing the old buildings. We went into cute shops and saw old buildings like the Gingerbread Mansion. Dr. Ring had property in Ferndale that included a house, a barn and a water tank house. In 1899, he had John Morris house movers move the mansion onto his property. At the time it was three stories tall, had 32 rooms, 11 bedrooms, 9 bathrooms and extensive gardens. Now it has 11 bedrooms and 11.5 bathrooms and is a working Bed-and-Breakfast.

I also really loved the way this beautiful Catholic Church looked. It was the first Catholic Church in Ferndale. The church was moved in 1895 from the corner of Washington and Berding streets to another lot on Washington street. Additions to the church were made by J.W. Blackmore at a cost of $4062.50 and the newly remodeled church was dedicated August 16, 1896.

After touring downtown, we went and had dinner at Ferndale Pizza Company. It was tasty, and the service was amazing. The town is so friendly and there is a lot happening. Unfortunately, we will be leaving before the Ferndale fair. I am sad because the fair includes eleven days of horse racing. That would have been fun to watch and even place a few bets.

We are staying in Fortuna at an RV Park. It is a bit warmer than Ferndale, which I am enjoying. It is fun to watch the fog burn off.

We also had adventures at the Lost Coast and Avenue of the Giants which I will share with you next time.
