Leaving Georgia and making our way to Florida

The last week has been a full one. We went sightseeing in Savannah with Caroline and Art last Sunday. We did a hop-on hop-off trolley so we could see the sights but also learn about the history of Savannah. In the 1730's, England founded the last of its colonies in North America. The project was the brainchild of James Oglethorpe, a former army officer. After Oglethorpe left the army, he devoted himself to helping the poor and debt-ridden people of London, whom he suggested settling in America. His choice of Georgia, named for the new King, was also motivated by the idea of creating a defensive buffer for South Carolina, an important colony with many potential enemies close by. These enemies included the Spanish in Florida, the French in Louisiana and along the Mississippi River, and Indian allies throughout the region. In 1732, the King chose twenty trustees who received funds for overseeing the colony. They could make laws, issue land grants and elect governing bodies for the colony. Fun fact: Savannah had four prohibitions. They were not allowed to have lawyers, slaves, Catholics or hard alcohol. It didn't take long for the settlers to begin to grumble about the laws and by the early 1740's slowly started taking the laws away.

The lawn by this sign was a place where men
would come to defend their honor in a duel.

Savannah has 22 historic squares, this is the Chippewa Square
where they filmed the opening of Forest Gump.

The First Act of Alcohol Prohibition in America
was decreed in Savannah in 1735.

Whiskey Gutter, September 10, 1926, children would gather up whiskey and wine
that the Prohibition agents destroyed with axes and dumped into the streets at
the intersection of Van Brunt and Sackett Streets, Brooklyn, New York.
The parents were behind the scheme, their presence would likely net their arrest.

New friends hubby and I made.

Interesting that Walgreens could sell
alcohol with a prescription.

We ended the day at Paula Dean's Creek House restaurant.
It was pretty tasty. Caroline, Art, Stacy and hubby.

Monday, Tara and I were able to hang run errands, grab lunch and pick up a few more baby chicks for her farm. Tuesday, hubby and I went to Tybee Island to eat at a "Road Food" book restaurant The Crab Shack. It was good and we were able to sit out and look over the water while we ate. The place also had baby alligators. Then we drove to the Boardwalk and saw the Atlantic Ocean. It was a great time.

It was a little windy at the beach.

If a category 5 hurricane came here it would be as tall as this sign.
Hubby's head is just above where a category 1 water surge.

Wednesday, we were able to celebrate Cameron on his 10th birthday. We picked up the boys and went out to dinner and then back to the house to open gifts. We had a beautiful sunset on the way home. God is so creative! Then we said our good-byes, but we will see them again over their Spring Break. So excited about that time together. We are enjoying making memories with them.

The birthday boy! Ten looks good on you, Cameron!

The beauty of God!

We left Friday to head to Florida for the month of April and are going to enjoy getting to know the area.

On the next blog, I will let you know all about Florida's bird, tree, flower and motto.

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." John 3:16 (NASB)
