Fun times in Boise, Idaho

After hubby came back home from "The Guys Trip", we did some site seeing around Boise. I found Kathryn Albertson Park, Boise's Premiere Habitat Park. It is not far from downtown and is open to the public year-round. Hubby and I had a nice time walking around, although it was a little hot, there was shade and a little breeze.

The first rock on the left has Kathryn's name and then the
rocks that follow spell out Albertson one rock at a time.

This park was dedicated in 1989 and has flowered into bloom as a
habitat for the man animals, insects species, migratory birds, trees,
flowers and shallow lagoons.

This is one of the two areas you can reserve
and have parties, wedding and other fun events.

I like the water bubbling over the rock fountains.

Pretty flowers.

The Rookery is the other area you can reserve.

These were some pretty large cattails.

Joe and Kathryn Albertson met in a chemistry class at The College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho. Joe was born October 17, 1906, in Yukon, Oklahoma and Kathryn was born August 27, 1908 in Boise, Idaho.  Joe started his grocery career at Safeway while he was attending college.

Albertsons was founded July 21, 1939. The grocery store was an enormous success. An ad in Boise's Idaho Statesman newspaper touted Albertson's first store as "Idaho's largest and finest food store." The store was filled with perks that, at the time, were brand new: free parking, a money-back guarantee, and even an ice cream shop.

Both Joe and Kathryn admired hard work, perseverance, being generous and genuine. They both believed that once you made it, you should give it back. They began discreetly giving back in the 1960's to the state where they lived, loved, worked and raised a family. Most often the focus of their giving was for education. Joe Albertson knew the secret of successful people is that they help others succeed. No matter how good you are, it can never be all about you.

After the park, we drove to the state capital to look around. Construction began in 1905, fifteen years after Idaho became a state. The cost was a little over $2 million and it was completed in 1920. Fun fact: Abraham Lincoln named William H. Wallace, a close person friend to be the first governor of the newly named Idaho Territory. Wallace chose Lewiston, Idaho as the first capital on July 10, 1863. The territorial legislature moved it to Boise on December 24, 1864.

Hard to tell, but it has a gold dome at the very top.

He was assassinated in 1905 by one-time union member
Harry Orchard, who was also a paid informant for
the Cripple Creek Mine Owners' Association.

Next to the state capital is the Boise State Law School. It hasn't always been called that, from 1932-1965 it was Boise Junior College, then from 1965 - 1969 it was Boise College and then from 1969 - 1974 it was Boise State College.

It is a pretty building.

The War Memorial in front of the college.

Driving downtown we also saw some amazing churches, just fun to see old churches. I have often thought about just taking pictures of them for a coffee table type of a book.

Saint Michael's Episcopal Cathedral. Construction began on September 7, 1899.

Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist. The parish was founded in 1876.

While out walking I was able to take a picture of a ring-necked dove and yet again another Bigfoot at the RV park.

Ring-necked dove.

He is everywhere.

I wanted to show you the finished little nook, I guess that is its new name. The ottoman is used for extra storage, the big pillow for a back rest and then I have 2 bins for more storage. I like the area and love extra storage.

What do you think about the area?

We arrived in Filer, Idaho yesterday and I am enjoying the cooler weather. It is just a few miles outside of Twin Falls, Idaho. I hope to do a lot of things outside over the next two weeks.

If there is something special you would like me to take a picture of, please let me know!
