Lake Ariel, PA

Let me start out by "keeping it real" an update from last Saturday (8/5/22). When we started our journey from New York to Pennsylvania we stopped at a restaurant for a bathroom break. While I was in the RV, hubby was checking out the tires and just making sure everything checked out. Well, it didn't! We had another leaf spring break. We could still drive, and I quickly Googled mobile welders. We found one in the next town only about 10 minutes away. We called just in time (11:50am) because on Saturdays they close at noon. He was amazing, he wasn't mobile, but we made it to him. He worked on the rig for about 2 hours and then we were on our way. Also, it was an amazing price. God was so good and so gracious to us. Thank You, Lord.

This is Chris. He was wonderful!

Making our way to Pennsylvania was great. We were able to have nice weather and when we made it to our site, we set up quickly, well, sort of had people talking with hubby. Because of the two hour delay, we ate dinner around 8:00pm that night. Not my usual time to eat dinner, but it was what it was.

A little tree trimming should be done here.

Our site for two weeks. Very nice and satellite friendly.

The town we are staying is named Lake Ariel. Fun fact: It is in the Poconos. The Pocono Mountains encompass forest peaks, lakes and valleys in the state of Pennsylvania. On the eastern edge is the bird-rich Delaware Water Gap, with river beaches and recreation facilities. Trails and bridges connect the waterfalls at nearby Bushkill Falls. The elevation is 2,215 and the highest point is Camelback Mountain.  Lake Ariel was first settled in 1822 by the Jones family, the town was first called The Stock Farm and later Jonestown or Jones Pond. The first farm was located at the south end of the lake. Although when the village was first settled, it was populated by only a few family farms, Jonestown soon expanded due to the Pennsylvania Coal Company's Gravity Railroad. It brought workers and soon businesses were needed to fulfill their needs, including a post office named Ariel, which would later lead to the change in name of the town.

I found this picture in the welcome center on the NY side of the Delaware River.

Since the late 19th century through the 20th century, Lake Ariel has had various thriving businesses. There were numerous sawmills, and Lake Ariel also had different factories such as a cheese factory and a chair factory. Many locals also held jobs at the ice houses and Lake Ariel Park. Lake Ariel Park was a major tourist area for the community. It contained a pavilion for picnics and dancing. There were also rides such as a waterslide, a rollercoaster called the Cyclone, carousels, and miniature train rides. The park also had a beach where visitors could go swimming or boating. The owners of Lake Ariel Park also purchased an airplane so that their visitors could pay to get rides in the plane. The Lake Ariel Park also led to the increased popularity of the Lake Ariel Hotel which was formerly known as the Columbia Hotel. The Lake Ariel Hotel stood in disrepair for many years until it was finally torn down in 2011.

Unfortunately, the Lake Ariel Park had a worse fate. Due to summer hurricanes and bad winters the park had to be closed in the early 1950s.

The amusement park back in the day.

Today, the population of Lake Ariel is 14,875 and has the median age of 49.6 years old. It is 239 acres large and ideal for boating and fishing, but residents also enjoy kayaking.

The main reason we chose this area is because Art and Caroline are close, and we wanted to visit with them. We were able to see each other last Wednesday and they introduced us to such a cute and sweet young lady, Charlotte Rose, their first granddaughter. She loves to laugh and make raspberries; it is the cutest thing ever. At five months old she is chill and loves everything she sees.

Meet Charlotte Rose. She is having a blast
on Nanny's (Caroline) lap.

We were so excited because they came back over on Thursday, and we had dinner together. The Lord was amazing as it was a wet rainy day, but just before they arrived it was gorgeous outside. We were even able to eat outside. Friday, we walked around the cute little town of Hawley, Pennsylvania. Had a great time with them.

This is a new place that you actually have to be a member of, The Vault.

We went to see a beautiful waterfall behind the Silk Mill Factory, but they stopped releasing
water at the dam. Now it is just a little water is flowing down.

Pretty flowers at the Silk Mill Factory and yes, I love purple.

We had a some drinks and an appetizer at Ledges Hotel (Silk Mill Factory).
It was pretty to look outside.

This was the Silk Mill Factory that opened in 1880.
It is now a place to shop, eat and book events.

Saturday, we drove around, Art and Caroline showed us where they used to live, the Delaware River that is between Pennsylvania and New York, Hawks Nest Road, a great winery, and actually hubby had his hands in three states at once.

PA is to the left and NY is to the right.

In 1859 this was a one lane dirt road.

In 1931 they started paving this road and they finished in 1933.

Many car and motorcycle commercials were made on this road.

He was very competitive and loved playing baseball.
Hubby looks so cute.

I am not sure what will happen today, but I believe the drone will be involved. Stay tuned for more pictures.

I must confess that I don't watch a lot of news, so I am not up on all the craziness happening in the world. I feel like we need to love more and fight less, but it doesn't seem like that will happen. So, today, let me encourage you from a few verses from Psalms 34:4-5,8 "I sought the Lord, and He answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces will never be ashamed. O taste and see that the Lord is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!" I hope you have a blessed week.

Another new state! Here are the state bird, tree, flower and motto for Pennsylvania.

*Pennsylvania: Ruffed Grouse (Bird), Eastern Hemlock (Tree), Mountain Laurel (Flower), "Virtue, Liberty, and Independence" (Motto).
