Week Two of PA

We had an amazing week, and we were able to hang out with Art and Caroline again. Last Sunday, they took us to Lake Wallenpaupack and we walked along the trail, went down to see the water, had an interesting lunch and then drove to the Delaware River and Hudson Canal Lock 31.

On the sidewalk outside of the Visitor Center.

Lake Wallenpaupack.

Fun to watch the water coming on the shore.

This is your model of a typical boat that would take coal up the Delaware River.

The canal lock. Locks lift boats up or down
to the next level of the canal.

This historic building was built in the early 1800's using post and beam construction.
In 1821 it was owned by Russell Daniels and was called the Daniels Farm.
The Delaware and Hudson Canal was built directly behind the house;
Lock 31 was placed here, the value of the property increased greatly.
Ernst Hintze, a grocer from Brooklyn NY bought the property in 1878
and remolded it to be a hotel and store that looked out over the canal.
Boatmen and passengers on the canal were able to stop here
and shop or spend the night.

Monday and Tuesday were days for running errands and laundry. Hubby also took his drone and flew over the lake at the RV campground. "Keeping it real" we had a lot of rain during our two-week stay, I am just so glad that we were able to spend as much time as we did with Art and Caroline.

See the black dot in the clouds? That is
the drone coming back to land.

Almost to the ground.

The drone didn't scare off the coyote.

Wednesday, Art and Caroline came over and we had Mexican Food. Thursday, Art and Caroline came over as well as their daughter Cheryl and Miss Cutie, Charlotte. Art volunteered to fix fish for us and then we had some additional sides. The fish, shrimp and scallops were very tasty. It was a fun two days with such fun people.

Friday, we met up with Art, Caroline, Cheryl and Charlotte for dinner in the town of Hawley. The Borough of Hawley was formed in 1884, but its history dates back to the 1790's when early pioneers discovered the might Paupack Falls and its ability to harness power for manufacturing.

Paupack Falls at Ledges Hotel. Unfortunately they didn't look like this
when we were there two weeks ago. They had just closed the dam.

Hawley was named for Irad Hawley, the first president of PA Coal Company. Thanks to the arrival of the D&H Canal in the 1820s and the Pennsylvania Coal Company (PCC) gravity railroad led to a population boom and the rapid development of the town. It wasn't until 1951 that Hawley adopted its current name. Fun fact: the success of the railroad opened the door for shops, eateries, stores and lodging along the water. Unfortunately, a raging fire in 1864 burned out of control and took out many of the merchants, the first major disaster the town experienced.

1864 fire.

We had a lovely dinner at The Ridge Restaurant. Miss Charlotte enjoyed her dinner for sure. Caroline tried to get us reservations the first week we were here, but they were booked until Friday. So glad that she was able to get reservations before we had to leave.

The drive back, the photo didn't do God's creation justice.

Saturday, we left early to drive to Rachel's Roadhouse in Mercy, PA. It is a Harvest Host location. We had a nice time.

We are in Amish country!!

The site for the night.

Rachel's Roadhose is the Harvest Host spot.

Today, we are arriving at the Baylor Beach Park in Navarre, Ohio.  We will be staying until Saturday and hope to be able to see the Amish and eat at one of their wonderful restaurants.

Thank you, Art and Caroline, for such a wonderful two weeks. Can't wait until we meet up in Texas in October. Safe travels on your next journey in September. "Just as lotions and fragrance give sensual delight, a sweet friendship refreshes the soul." Proverbs 27:9 (The Message).
